Maxfield Gast
Philadelphia-raised musician and composer Maxfield Gast has been widely recognized for his performance on the alto, tenor, soprano and baritone saxophones and EWI, as well as for his composition. In 2009 he began writing and performing the soundtrack for Louis CK’s hit show Louie as part of the studio band, SweetPro. The show went on to be named the #1 television series of 2011 by Time Magazine and has since won several Primetime Emmy Awards, Critics’ Choice Television Awards, a 2013 Golden Globe nomination, and is currently airing in it’s fourth season. Gast and SweetPro also wrote and performed the music for CK’s Emmy Award winning release, Live at Beacon Theater.

As a bandleader, Gast has released several albums including Side By Side, Eat Your Beats, and Trio Innovations, all on the Militia Hill label. The eclectic grooves of Eat Your Beats met with a great deal of success, landing on college radio charts, national broadcasts on NPR radio, a publishing deal with BigHouse Publishing New York, licensing by MTV for shows including Cribs and True Life, in addition to winning a gold medal in the international Graphis Annual Design Competition for its vibrant artwork created by his sister, Jane Gast.

Maxfield has performed all around the world in venues and festivals including New York’s Carnegie Hall, Hultsfred Festival in Stockholm, Center City Jazz Festival in Philadelphia, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Austin’s SXSW Festival, and Bluesfest in Ottawa. Gast has also joined the bandstand with a wide variety of artists including Reggie Watts, Cage the Elephant, Louis CK, Grammy-nominated Ryan Shaw, Doodlebug of the Digable Planets, Bilal, Sharon Little, Tim Motzer, Dana Leong, Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens, George Stanford, Tri-state Indie Award-winning bands Work Drugs and Aaron & the Spell, American Music Award-winning band The Bomb Squad, Wu Li, Keith DeStefano’s Puzzlebox, Ronnie Burrage’s Band Burrage, the late Edgar Bateman’s Truth, and SweetPro.

Gast has recently released multiple singles including Browser, an upbeat and lively solo track featuring soprano saxophone and EWI, and the GLG Sessions, a project in which he collaborated with Grammy-nominated songwriter (of The Roots) Jeremy Grenhart, and Philadelphia composer Tyler Lynch. The GLG Sessions feature a soulful and sophisticated sound combining Gast’s roots in pop, jazz, and rhythm and blues. He is currently working on a new solo album as well as collaborative works with a variety of artists including Grammy Award winning songwriter and guitarist Scot Sax of the band Wanderlust.
